Summary
Photo credit: Richard Warren Lipack - Wikimedia Commons: To the left is a detail of a NAAMLYST JOURNAL page found in the Wm. Fothergill Cooke telegraph builder's manuscript journal 1836 - 1842. Notice should be directed to the full signature showing on the left of the page for "Frederick Kerby," the young primary machinist for Cooke and Wheatstone's telegraph production. The autograph embodies unique flourishes found in the letters "F" and "K" of Kerby's signature, with in particular - the flourish found in the letter "F". It embodies the same flourish and signature flow in the large boldly written letter "P" found in the word "Paid." This clearly shows that the word "Paid" was executed in Kerby's hand. Notations of numbers representing financial compensation to Kerby are also seen on the right side of the page. This is executed in the same boldness as the other data entered by Kerby. This journal page detail is found on one of a few pages of the Cooke journal; all documenting Kerby as having been a hired and paid machinist for making Cooke and Wheatstone's early telegraph apparatus. The page also acts as a primary source for documenting other references to be in Kerby's hand for his acknowledging having been under the employ of Cooke and Wheatstone for his machining work.
